The New Atari Console: Is It Fake News?
If you were born in the 80’s your probably familiar with the Atari consoles that are nowhere to be seen.
A video was released on ataribox.com showing off what looks like a new system. The video is only 20 seconds long but shows off what looks like a modern Atari console.
If this is a new console I doubt it will be competing with the Xbox one and PS4. If anything it will be similar to the Nintendo NES Classic Edition, loaded with all the classic Atari games. Some Reddit users seem to think that this new Atari console may run SteamOS and potentially be a gaming computer.
This means you die-hard retro gamers who can’t get your hands on an Atari are in luck. Finally, you will be able to play some good old fashion pong with your friends.
It’s hard to tell if this is a legit Atari website, but it does show the official logo in the top left corner and again in the video. The trademark at the bottom is as follows “©2017 Atari and the Atari logo are registered trademarks of Atari Interactive, Inc. All other trademarks are the property of their respective owners.”.
Is This A Hoax Or Third Party Console?
I did a bit of investigating to figure out if this was actually a new Atari console.
For those don’t don’t know, you can actually use services like whois.net to look up who owns domain names. It shows information such as company name, address and phone number. When registering a domain name you can choose an option called “Whois Guard” to keep this information from leaking to the public.
As you can see by this image Atari.com has their contact information viewable to the public, while ataribox.com completely hides it. Why would Atari feel the need to hide their information like this? To me, this raises a red flag.
The Source Code
By doing a simple check of the ataribox.com source code I was able to find out the website is hosted by Wix. For those of you who don’t know Wix is a website creator used mainly by people who aren’t very experienced in web development. It’s pretty much a drag and drops website builder for mom bloggers.
Would Atari use Wix to make a website? Maybe, but I highly doubt it. Yet another red flag.
There is still no way to be sure whether the AtariBox is legit or not. We are just going to have to wait for an official announcement. Even if it is similar to the Nintendo Classic yet developed by a third party it would be pretty damn cool.
You can go to ataribox.com now and subscribe to their newsletter to be the first to find out what the heck it is.
Let me know what you think down in the comments.
